Want to start taking photography seriously

I'm planning on an education in photography one year from now, so I need to learn as much as possible before that. Any advice will gladly be accepted.

The first step is to force myself getting involved with some contests here on deviantART.

I have put up the black and white feature, but am asking that everyone who participated go view it to see if they have been featured. This way, the artists will get more exposure, and everyone will get to see what I decided to choose.
